[There's a long, long pause at that. And then he slowly groans, leaning forward and burying his face in his hands.]

Ooooooh, crud. Seriously?

Not a prince. Really, honestly not a prince. A literal thief.

I'm an even bigger idiot than I thought. I take back everything I said earlier, I'm not scum. I'm worse than scum. I'm like, mucus. I'm a slime mold. I'm that stuff you get in plastic eggs and make farting noises with.

...I've kind of heard the story you're from, Rapunzel.

[Wince. He never ever wanted to tell her that.]

[She stops and just looks at him.]

I mean story. Everybody here, we're all from different worlds, right?

[God, this conversation again. Now she was really gonna be mad at him. Everybody he had this discussion with ended up miffed.]

So...basically, all those different worlds, all our different lives, are stories in another world. Where I'm from, there's a very famous fairy tale about you, and your long, beautiful hair, locked away in a tower, until you're rescued by a prince.

[She's at a loss for words as she just stares at Stiles for a long while. Eventually she limply takes a seat on the couch again.]

But I...that's not me. I wasn't rescued by a prince. I left on my own. To see the lights. I don't know any princes.

Yeeeeah. I get that now. I probably should have been paying closer attention.

[For the first time in his life, he didn't figure things out properly. He made his usual jump in logic, but landed completely wrong. And now he's really, properly screwed up.]

[For a moment it sounds like she's going to be comforting or reassuring.]

[He slumps forward again, elbows on knees, forehead planted on the heels of his palms.]

I'm gonna go get a big neon sign. It'll blink on and off over my head. Just the words "Total Idiot" on repeat all day long, flashing everybody I come in contact with.

I just...I don't understand. If that's what you've been thinking all this time, then why did you let things go as far as they did with us...?

[Now that's a trickier question to answer. And he actually thinks first before speaking. It's time to really make this clear. Because he knows they're coming at this from two very different perspectives.]

Because I really do like you. I mean, I really do. Whenever you learn something new, and you light up so brightly? It makes my heart skip a beat. I mean that. I want to be around you, I like you, you're amazing.

Yeah, I know. And I do respect that, which is why I never tried to take it anywhere you were uncomfortable with.

[ He waits a couple of days, mostly to let things settle and calm down, let Stiles recover from the, ah, excitement of that night. He thinks about calling, but decides against it, in the end. Better to face this head on.

So he's banging on Stiles' door, earlyish in the morning. He's still pretty mad, truth be told, but he's holding it in. For now. ]

[When Stiles answers the door, the bruise on his face is at that yellow-purple-green stage, and his split lip has healed nicely, just a thin line across the middle. And he actually is grinning at Derek when he opens the door.]

Hey! You actually came over to my place for once! This is, like, momentous occasion stuff here, I feel like I need to bust out a bottle of champagne and take lots of pictures.

[ He is not amused. ] Funny.

Oh-...kay. You're mad at me for some reason? So um. Come in. Sit on my sofa, and I'm gonna...get you snacks. Or something.

[ He at least resists the urge to grab at Stiles' face. Derek stalks inside, but doesn't sit, watching Stiles as he moved. ] Who hit you?

[He's at his fridge when Derek asks that, and he slowly turns back, a very perplexed look on his face.]

Um. That eight foot tall Kedan that smelled like rotten eggs? You were standing right there. You saw it. Oh god, don't tell me you're having a amnesiac episode, I can't cope with that right now.

No. The quote 'psychotic person who liked to play with electricity and knives' unquote. [ Derek crosses his arms, and stares Stiles down, eyebrows raised. ]

[Stiles is quiet for a moment, because his brain is whirring ahead, and he realizes that, yup, he never told Derek the truth about that night after the lacrosse game. That he saw Erica and Boyd tied up in the Argent's basement. And he knows the telling will freak the werewolf the fuck out.]

Um. It was a while ago, Derek. It's no big deal, it's over. Let's not rehash ancient history, huh?

[That gets a genuine startle out of him, looking like he's been smacked across the face. Again. And there's no lie in his voice as he answers.]
