[It's Stiles, he can't help but inject even the tiniest bit of humor into the situation.]

Look...I thought it was a prince giving it to you. Like, bona-fide prince, son of the king, making you his forever love queen.

[Rapunzel just looks all sorts of confused now.]

A prince? Why would you think that? Eugene is a thief, not a prince.

[There's a long, long pause at that. And then he slowly groans, leaning forward and burying his face in his hands.]

Ooooooh, crud. Seriously?

What? What is it?

Not a prince. Really, honestly not a prince. A literal thief.

I'm an even bigger idiot than I thought. I take back everything I said earlier, I'm not scum. I'm worse than scum. I'm like, mucus. I'm a slime mold. I'm that stuff you get in plastic eggs and make farting noises with.

Stiles. You're not making any sense.

...I've kind of heard the story you're from, Rapunzel.

[Wince. He never ever wanted to tell her that.]

You're supposed to live happily ever after with a prince.

[She stops and just looks at him.]

Story? What do you mean?

[skybluejeep]

I mean story. Everybody here, we're all from different worlds, right?

[God, this conversation again. Now she was really gonna be mad at him. Everybody he had this discussion with ended up miffed.]

So...basically, all those different worlds, all our different lives, are stories in another world. Where I'm from, there's a very famous fairy tale about you, and your long, beautiful hair, locked away in a tower, until you're rescued by a prince.

[She's at a loss for words as she just stares at Stiles for a long while. Eventually she limply takes a seat on the couch again.]

But I...that's not me. I wasn't rescued by a prince. I left on my own. To see the lights. I don't know any princes.

Yeeeeah. I get that now. I probably should have been paying closer attention.

[For the first time in his life, he didn't figure things out properly. He made his usual jump in logic, but landed completely wrong. And now he's really, properly screwed up.]

I...oh, my god. Rapunzel, I am an even bigger idiot than I ever thought possible. I can't even excuse it anymore. This whole time, I've been thinking there was no way we could last. Because you had your prince to get home to.

[For a moment it sounds like she's going to be comforting or reassuring.]

That is really, really stupid! [Well, so much for that.]

[He slumps forward again, elbows on knees, forehead planted on the heels of his palms.]

I'm gonna go get a big neon sign. It'll blink on and off over my head. Just the words "Total Idiot" on repeat all day long, flashing everybody I come in contact with.

I just...I don't understand. If that's what you've been thinking all this time, then why did you let things go as far as they did with us...?

[skybluejeep]

[Now that's a trickier question to answer. And he actually thinks first before speaking. It's time to really make this clear. Because he knows they're coming at this from two very different perspectives.]

Because I really do like you. I mean, I really do. Whenever you learn something new, and you light up so brightly? It makes my heart skip a beat. I mean that. I want to be around you, I like you, you're amazing.

But...Rapunzel, we really haven't gotten all that far.

Stiles...everything is far for me. You're the first person I've ever done anything like that with.

Yeah, I know. And I do respect that, which is why I never tried to take it anywhere you were uncomfortable with.

I guess...I guess it boils down to the fact that I'm...god, okay. I'm gonna say it and please don't hit me. I'm a teenage boy who's trying very hard not to make his girlfriend go someplace sexy! That's difficult. Okay?

[That stung, and it shows in her expression.]

I wasn't enough then. Is that why you kissed Derek?

[Damn it. Now he really feels rotten.]

No. Not at all. Rapunzel...I saved his life. Like, three or four times. I really care about him. And...and I really care about you! And I don't...I can't figure this out. And like I said, I'm an idiot.

[Quietly, she stands up, avoiding looking at him again.]

Then you should take the time to figure it out, Stiles.

[skybluejeep]

[He doesn't protest that. In fact, he bows his head and nods in agreement.]

...Yeah. I should. I'm...I'm sorry, Rapunzel.

[watcheslanterns]

[She holds out her hand, inviting him to take it, but still keeps looking ahead.]

[He takes her hand without hesitation, and squeezes it tightly. Yeah, he's definitely got feelings for her, even now.]

[She squeezes back and speaks softly.]
