Hey, hey! I wasn't complaining about the blood. Danny was.

But oh god, the look on your face when you put on that one old shirt of mine. I hadn't worn that thing since junior high, it was too small even for me.

[He momentarily collapses against Derek's shoulder, snickering, as he remembers the scene.]

[ Derek huffs out his nose, clearly unimpressed. ] None of those shirts fit, Stiles.

Yeah, but the orange and blue one really didn't fit.

It's not my fault you're built like a statue of a Greek god and I'm a pool noodle. I was just trying to nip a public health risk in the bud.

What public health risk?

Um. Blood-borne pathogens. All over your shirt.

Not to mention that if a werewolf bite makes you a werewolf, it's kinda obvious that werewolf blood isn't something we want just...hanging around.

One, I wasn't an Alpha then, and only the Alpha bite does that. Two, that's not how it works, anyway.

It just does? I don't know. But it isn't like that. [ He frowns at Stiles, but doesn't push him off. ]

"It just does." Cop out, dude. Total cop-out. You're the big bad born wolf around here, always giving Scott the line about how he knows nothing and you know everything and he needs to follow you, and you drop "it just does" at me.

My apologies for werewolf biology not being taught in school or anywhere. I'll get right on that.

Pfft. Come on, you have to know at least a little something about how lycanthropy is spread. A protein in an alpha's saliva? What?

I was studying prions in biology this year, I'm all up to date. Lay some knowledge on me, big guy.

[ Derek sighs. ] I really don't know, Stiles, I just know that a lot of our makeup is different than humans. It's not like we're offering ourselves up to science for experimentation. If someone out there's figured it out, they haven't told me. [ He frowns briefly, thinking. ] I know that the.. black substance that we expectorate when tainted with wolfsbane or something like it is our body's way of rejecting the poison, kind of like how white blood cells work in humans, only way more violent and gross. It has something to do with the healing process, and how ours differ.

So...black blood cells, maybe. Interesting. Maybe an attempt to encapsulate the poison with a pus-like substance, like humans do, only totally out of control, processing and healing so fast that there's just...left-over crud.

By the way, you're not allowed to offer yourself up for experiments. To anybody. Ever.

[ Dryly: ] Well, if you insist.

I do. I've watched enough episodes of bad sci-fi shows to know that never ends well.

...Okay, hold on, I take it back, you can offer yourself up to me for experiments, but not of the science kind.

[And he playfully waggles his eyebrows at him.]

[ Derek shoves at him. ] Stop.

[He just bursts out laughing, elbowing Derek in the ribs and settling back down.]

I'm just exploiting the loop hole, that's all. Besides, I know if I don't make certain policies clear now, you'll attempt to do something like that in the future. Always with the best intentions, but man, it's the worst decision. That's just how you are.

[And his tone is so fond...]

[ But it hits him hard. ] I don't...

[ He looks down at his hands, frowning at them, like if he glares at them long enough they'll tell him what to do, how to do it, how to do all of this. ] I don't know what else to do. I don't want the people I care about getting hurt, but it doesn't matter what I do, because it happens anyway.

[He gently whaps Derek on the shoulder with the back of his hand.]

Knock that off, Emo McGee. That wasn't a cue to get all mopey about it. Like I said, best intentions. That's what matters.

[ Derek looks up at him, not sure what his face is doing, despite his best efforts to keep it neutral. He probably just looks confused. He's not sure about that, the best of intentions thing. Wasn't there a saying about that? And he's pretty sure Isaac would disagree. But he nods, just once. Because he wants to believe. ] Yeah. I guess.

[Stiles is overwhelmed by a need to kiss that face. But he withholds. His will is strong! For now.]
